“as arras matrimoniales, or wedding coins in English, is a wedding tradition that has been passed down for generations in the Hispanic culture. It’s a ritual that has its roots in the Catholic faith and is performed at Catholic weddings in Spain, across Latin America, and in other Hispanic cultures around the world.” – BRIDES They stood under in front of the arch feet from the Delaware River. Their bridal party gathered around them, encasing them in a circle, a protection over their marriage. As Jesse held a collection of coins in his hands, the officiant explained the tradition to us. Jesse dropped the coins into Jen’s hands. They repeated the steps of passing the coins a few times, each time the officiant narrated the reason and thought behind the passing. The sun beat down on us as Jen and Jesse became officially husband and wife after being together since high school. As Jesse said, “I have always felt comfortable being myself around her and knew she was with me. We grew up together and it was never a question of WHO but rather a question of WHEN with Jennifer. Their summer wedding at Shawnee Inn might have been a very hot and humid one, but it was also one full of a lot of joy and so much celebration. I’ve spent 9 years photographing weddings and I have never had an entire dance floor full BEFORE dinner was served.
Jen and Jesse, Congratulations! Thank you so much for inviting into your wedding day and into your lives. I have loved spending time with you both over the past two years as we’ve planned your wedding day. May you be blessed with a marriage full of all the blessings the world can give you and may it fulfill your wildest dreams.
