What’s the number one thing you look for when you’re searching for the perfect photographer? Is it price, style, personality? If you’ve been looking for a wedding photographer you’ve probably realized that it can be a little overwhelming at times. So I’m here to help you in your search with my 5 best tips on finding the perfect wedding photographer! 

ALWAYS ask to see a full wedding gallery.

This will help you get a feel for what your gallery could look like. Make sure that the style you want is what their full gallery is showing. How do they style your bridal details? What do the family formals look like? How are the reception images? A photographers Instagram and website only shows the best of the best. Your full wedding gallery will also include the best. So does their best met your expectations and desires for your wedding?!

Follow your gut!

In your consultation meeting did you click with them?! Did you enjoy talking and did it flow easy? You’re going to be spending 8 plus hours with this person…you want to enjoy that time and be comfortable with them! Your gut will tell you a lot. So listen to it. If something feels off, dig a little deeper into that feeling and figure out what feels off and why.

Have you asked how experienced they are?

It’s ok if they’re just starting out, we all start somewhere. But they should be up front with you about that. There’s a lot more to being a wedding photographer than just snapping some photos and understanding that and dealing with all a wedding throws at a photographer is something that comes with experience.

Do they offer engagement portraits?

The time you spend with your photographer during your engagement session is invaluable to your wedding day photography! During this time not only do you get to know them personally and build that relationship that will make your wedding day more enjoyable. But you get practice in front of the camera, learn how they pose you. And your photographer learns how you are in front of the camera. This way if wedding day timeline runs late and you loose valuable portrait time, you don’t have to sacrifice images as a result because you’ll be able to move through poses faster.

Do they offer a second shooter? 

Not only will having a second present allow for more angles of all the moments, increase the number of images captured and ultimately delivered. But this also allows for the groom portraits to be taken at the same time bride portraits are being taken which allows more of a relaxed timeline. A second means that while lead is capturing bride during ceremony, second is capturing groom. While lead is capturing you both during the ceremony or reception, second is capturing your guests. During your portraits, your second can be at cocktail hour capturing your guests. Additionally, having a second present gives you a peace of mind that if god forbid your lead shooters equipment breaks, and their backup equipment breaks, the second is there to capture it all!
