It was a cool overcast morning. The gps directed me. Turn left, get on Rt 100 toward Ellicott City. The street address seemed familiar to me but I wasn’t sure. As the gps continued with its directions, I became more and more confident. “I swear, I’m going to my old neighborhood.” Sure enough, “turn left onto Wheatfield Way.” My parents moved out of Wheatfield about two years ago. I “grew up” there. While we didn’t move into that home on Haycarriage Court until I was 15, I spent my biggest years there. I have the most memories at that home. That neighborhood means alot to me. So pulling back into it felt comfortable. Almost as if we hadn’t left it. I drove past our home, making note to all the changes the new owners have made. They took down the big beautiful tree in the front yard. That tree turned the most beautiful shade of orange in the fall. I continued down Wheatfield Way to Nathan’s home. I was greeted at the door by Ryan, Nathan’s dad and their sweet little pug. We walked down the hallway toward the kitchen. The family room on the right. Norah, Nathan’s brand new big sister, snuggled between Grandma and Grandpa on the couch. They sat watching Disney Plus. The three of us ventured upstairs to meet Nathan and Hannah. I found them in the nursery. His room simply decorated. Labeled “Little Man’s Cave”. Ryan took Norah to play for a few minutes while Hannah and I discussed our game plan for their Newborn Portraits in Ellicott City. After capturing a few, just Nathan portraits in his crib. We headed to mom and dad’s room. Norah was shy, as most toddlers are. But with a little bit of coaxing. Little bit of conversation about school, her friends and her favorite tv shows. And of course, a few pieces of chocolate candy coated courage, that little girl snuggled her brand new baby brother. We kept their session short and sweet, the best way to do newborn portraits with big siblings. But we made sure to include a few moments of play for Norah.

My biggest piece of advice for any session that includes kiddos, let them play! The best images of your children will happen in the moments when they’re comfortable, relaxed and having fun.

Ryan and Hannah, thank you so much for asking me to be there to capture this big moment in your family’s story. Thank you for your patience and trust during the process and for welcoming me into your home. Norah, thank you for being such a patient big sister. For loving on your baby brother and for showing me your doll house. Nathan, thank you for being such a relaxed baby. Ready to soak up all the snuggles and ignore all the snapping in  your face. Kaufman family, congratulations again!
