She wore a light blue dress. Trimmed in white with a scalloped edge. She laid on mommy and daddy’s white bed. The goal was to capture a few portraits of her in her dress. Just her. But when you’re only a few weeks old, you don’t want to be alone. You want to be snuggled and held and loved on. She fussed ever so slightly. Just enough to let us know she needed something. Her brand new daddy knew exactly what she needed. She needed to be loved on. He calmly walked over to her, scooped up her head in his palm, her bottom in the other. He leaned over the bed so he could quickly shush her and remind her she wasn’t alone and we could continue on with her portraits. He leaned in nice and close. Nose to nose and just loved her. She immediately relaxed. She was safe in his arms. For me, the photographer of these Newborn Portraits in Laurel, that moment was so much more important than any portrait of her smiling laying on the bed. Those are the moments why I absolutely adore lifestyle newborn portraits. So I snapped away. The result – some of my all time favorite daddy daughter portraits to date.
Rachael reached out back in January about how they were definitely going to want me to capture their newborn portraits. If you’re an avid follower of the blog, you might remember Rachael and Billy. They were married at The Shawnee Inn a few years ago and I was fortunate enough to be there to capture it. So when she reached out, I was ecstatic to be asked to capture another important life moment for them. Then of course covid happened. Rachael didn’t know if newborn portraits were going to happen. But they finally decided that we could make it a safe environment for this moment to be captured and that’s exactly what we did! Covid wasn’t going to steal this from them.
Rachael and Billy, congratulations! Layla is adorable and such a little sweetie! Welcome to the parents club, its by far the most precious and prized club to be a part of, even in the hardest most exhausting of moments. It goes by so fast – it’s true what they say, “the longest of days and the shortest of years.” Don’t ignore that saying, take all the time to soak in all the moments and try your hardest to not get totally lost in the daily to-dos. You only get to snuggle her for so long. PS, this is all stuff I’m trying to remind myself of daily!
