“I used to be lonely, but now I have Solomon. I will never be lonely anymore!” – Eli

Some of my absolute favorite sessions are like this exact Howard County General Newborn Portraits session. Why do you ask? Because I absolutely love being present and capturing the moment the older sibling finally gets to meet their brand new younger sibling. These images capture a family’s story and an very important and intimate story. Eli arrived at the hospital room, walked in and you could feel his anxiety as he looked at Solomon from across the room. Eli’s the oldest sibling that I’ve captured in this type of session. Most of the time they’ve only been two or three, when all they feel and show is pure joy for “my baby”. But five year olds feel and express a wider range of emotion. You could tell he was excited but all eyes were on him in this very strange room, with his parents who he hadn’t seen in a day or so, his grandparents present and while he knows me, me being present for a moment that I’m sure he didn’t quite know what to expect. It’s exciting to meet someone new but to meet your new sibling?! That’s a lot of emotion. I remember when I was nine and met my baby brother for the first time, I’m sure if it was captured I would’ve had the same reserved look on my face. Especially since I’m a quieter and reserved person, even more so as a child. Anyways, after a minute of encouraging, Eli made his way to the bed where Rachael and Solomon sat and got to meet his brand new brother. Since then I’ve heard Eli has taken on the role of big brother with pride and excitment and as you can see from his quote above, he loves having Solomon around.
